Check Out These Realistic Fitness Goals for Office Workers in the New Year

Happy New Year! With it being a brand new year, that means a brand new you! You’ve thought of your fitness goals, right? You’re probably rolling your eyes thinking, “No way! I work a 40 hour per week desk job, I don’t have the time or energy to become fit!” Or maybe you’ll create fitness goals but won’t stick to them. That’s why we’re here to help you create REALISTIC fitness goals for yourself and stick to them. Keep in mind that physical fitness is only one aspect of your overall health and well-being. You need fitness goals for a variety of other aspects like sleep and planning. Create these goals and stick to them and you’ll be well on your way to being a happier, healthier, and more productive person than ever!

1. Realistic Sleep Fitness Goal: I will go to bed earlier and will wake up each morning 10 minutes earlier than I did in the previous week.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” In fact, modern scientific studies confirm the famous quote to be true. Studies have shown that those who go to bed early and wake up early experience less stress, a decreased tendency to procrastinate, motivation, and increased attractiveness. Imagine waking up 2 hours before you do right now, what would you accomplish in that time? A jump start on work emails? A morning workout? What about a complete, nutritious breakfast? The morning is yours to conquer. You may be hesitant to make this change, but going to bed earlier and waking up just 10 minutes earlier than the last week will make this sleep fitness goal more manageable. Before long, you’ll be an energized and productive morning machine!

2. Realistic Eating Fitness Goal: I will bring a healthy alternative snack with me to eat as a substitute for breakroom treats.

There’s a common misconception that when dieting you need to make a drastic change in your eating habits. This is simply not true. Decide instead to make small changes that add up to big differences. Take, for example, breakroom treats. Everyone loves them, especially when its donuts or cake. For an office worker, those are evil calories because donuts and cake are foods with little nutritional value and an excess of sugar. More importantly, you’re sitting down the majority of the day which means those calories are not being burned off. To combat the temptation, bring an alternative snack to the office like fruit, nuts, or yogurt. These healthy options will make your body much happier in the long run and prevent you from gaining unwanted weight!

Use a calendar to write down and schedule everything from work and personal tasks to some quality ‘me’ time. The key to your planning success is to schedule the exact day and time you will complete a task. So, when you move through your day, there is no other task that is more important than what you have written on your calendar. This weekly planning hour will make a world of difference in the present and future.

4. Realistic Physical Fitness Goal: I will get up out of my chair and walk throughout the day.

It’s no secret that walking is beneficial to your health and wellbeing. However, when you work a desk job, you feel glued to your chair at times and before you know it, hours have passed since you’ve stood up. Over time, this can lead to health problems like diabetes, obesity, and depression. Rest assured, you can help prevent this. One study has found that walking for 5 minutes each hour during the workday can boost mood, energy, and decrease food cravings. Another choice you can make is to walk around during your lunch period. These extra steps can increase the blood flow to your legs all while boosting your mood!
